I am fascinated by music and experience its profound power every day.
My musical thoughts and experiences arise from the very core of my being, making it especially moving for me to reflect on concepts such as:
• The birth of music as an expression of will.
• The inherent will of music to be heard.
• The process through which a piece of music becomes.
• The mystery that lies at the heart of music.
• Music as an expression of Universalia ante rem—the realm of pure originality.
To illustrate these ideas, I turn to an inspiring passage from Constant van Wessem’s An Introduction to Modern Music. It includes a quote by Jules Combarieu that resonates deeply with me:
“Music is not an exceptional phenomenon or a fleeting phase in human history, nor is it merely a tool for religious ceremonies, a temporary expression of joy, sadness, or meditation, or even a luxury art form created for entertainment.
Music is as natural and universal as language—at first, like language, halting and stuttering in its early forms, but always present wherever humanity exists. And when one considers the forms it takes, music is deeply connected to the enduring laws of social life.”
